Project Description

Contra Costa County had commissioned the design of a new county justice facility including detention and court components and was proceeding with implementation when community concerns from the neighborhoods abutting the new project raised objections to the visual impact on the community.

Due to a court order requiring the County to provide a new facility within a fixed period of less than 24 months, the initial design was scrapped and KMD was engaged to design a new facility incorporating community input.

The project was fast-tracked and opened on time. The innovative design of the residential clusters set a trend which was followed by numerous facilities throughout the U.S.

Services provided included:

  • Design development
  • Coordination of all mechanical systems for resident clusters involving detailed designs of all shafts containing water, wastewater and electrical systems in order to permit steel fabrication to proceed on a fast-tracked basis.

Role:
Architect & Mechanical Systems Coordinator
